What is Ramadan in Islam?

Ramadan (also Ramadhan/ Ramazan) is the Ninth Islamic month and the most important month for the Muslims. In this holy month, the Muslims fast daily. 

Allah says in the Quran, “O’ you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may achieve Taqwaa (righteousness, God-fearing).” [Surat Al-Baqarah, verse 183]

What is Fast in Islam?

Fasting in Islam, is the practicing of refrain from food, drink, smoking, and sexual activity between dawn prayer Adhan Time (Fajr Prayer) to sunset prayer Adhan Time (Maghrib Prayer). Fasting is fourth pillar of Islam so it is necessary for every Muslim to fast in the month of Ramadan.

What is Suhur in Ramadan?

Suhur or Suhoor is the pre-dawn meal, It is the meal eaten by Muslims during the month of Ramadan before dawn prayer Adhan time (Fajr Prayer).

What is Iftar in Ramadan?

Iftar is the meal that we eat after breaking our fast (by reading the dua of breaking fast) at sunset prayer adhan time ( Maghrib Time). We should break our fast as like as our Prophet Muhammad explained, by eating a date and sips of water. After that we can eat and drink anything. 

What is the main purpose of Ramadan?

Ramadan is important because it is the month in which ALLAH first revealed the Holy Quran (the Holy Book of Muslims) to the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), the last prophet of ALLAH. Ramadan is also important because Fasting in Islam, is the practicing of refrain from food, drink, smoking, and sexual activity from dawn prayer Adhan Time (Fajr Prayer) to sunset prayer Adhan Time (Maghrib Prayer). Fast is fourth pillar of Islam so it is necessary for every muslim to practicing fast in the month of Ramadan.

What are the rules of Ramadan?

During the month of Ramadan, the Muslims fast from Dawn Prayer to Sunset prayer and during this period the Muslims abstain of eating or drinking anything, sexual activities as well as those things that are not allowed in Islam. 

  • Ramadan is the month of blessings and forgiveness. It is the time of self-restraint and also self-reflection for a person. Fasting is a best way of soul cleaning and thoughts. We should avoid bad thoughts during fasting. 
  • We should spend our fast in the remembrance of Allah by offering prayers, Reading Quran and Azkar’s
  • We should avoid those activities that are not allowed in Islam.
  • We should do suhur before sunrise, Suhur is the prefast meal eaten by Muslims and then we have to restrict ourselves from eating or drinking anything for the whole day till sunset prayer.

How can I participate in Ramadan?

Anyone who is the follower of Islam and Allah, can take participate in Ramadan. A person should get up early before Fajr, the Dawn prayer Time to prepare the meal and do the Suhur (suhur is the prefast meal). After that a person should brush the teeth and make sure there is not even a piece of food in his/her mouth. Before few minutes of Dawn Prayer Adhan Time (Fajr Time) person should make intention of Fast and should say the Dua of making intention of Fast, which is: 

Dua for starting fast

In English: Wa bisawmi ghadinn nawaiytu min shahri Ramadan.

Translation: I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan.

After making intention, a person can’t eat or drink or can’t do others activities which are not allowed. During the period of fast, a person should offer prayers, reading Quran and spend the time in the remembrance of Allah. 

Before the Sunset prayer Adhan time ( Maghrib Prayer) a person should start the preparation of Iftar and also should take care of the people around you by sharing your Iftar with them. When you hear the sunset prayer Adhan, a person should break fast by saying the following dua: 

Dua for breaking fast

In English: Allahumma inni laka sumtu, wa bika aamantu, wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu, wa Ala rizqika aftartu

Translation: I fasted for You and I believe in You and I put my trust in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance.
